Community Development

Study of factors that promote and impede community participation in development activities. For the Community Organisation Participation and Empowerment Project (COPE) and the Ministry of Local Government and UNICEF (July 1999). Sechaba worked with the staff of the Ministry of Local Government to conduct 120 in-depth interviews in Berea, Maseru, Mokhotlong  and Quthing Districts. The findings include perceptions of development projects and their sustainibility; the roles of local authorities including chiefs and Village Development Councils; the role of extension workers; and the role of Community Based Organisations (CBOs). Additional data collected during the Sechaba Consultants 1999 poverty study survey is incorporated in appropriate places in the report.
